One of the most common questions we hear from parents is a simple one: when is the right age to start drama classes?

The honest answer is that there is no perfect age. Every child develops at their own pace, and performing arts can make a positive difference at every stage of childhood. Whether you have an imaginative four-year-old who loves make-believe, a primary school child looking to build confidence, or a teenager with ambitions for the stage and screen, there is something to be gained from stepping into the spotlight.

At PQA, we believe the best time to start is when your child is ready to explore, create and have fun. Our age-appropriate classes are designed to meet young performers where they are, helping every child discover their potential in a supportive, encouraging environment.

Why drama classes are valuable at any age.

Children grow and develop in their own unique way, and confidence is no different. Some children are eager to step into the spotlight from day one, while others need a little more time and encouragement before they feel ready to share their ideas. Both journeys are equally valuable.

At PQA, we believe every child deserves the chance to thrive at their own pace. That's why our exciting classes for Poppets and unique combination in Main Academy: Musical Theatre, Film & TV and Comedy & Drama are carefully tailored to each age group, creating a supportive environment where quieter children can gradually build confidence and find their voice, while more experienced performers continue to be challenged, inspired and engaged.

It's also worth remembering that performing arts is about so much more than performance. While some of our students go on to enjoy exciting opportunities on stage and screen, every child gains something meaningful from their experience. Young people develop confidence, communication skills, creativity, resilience and teamwork. They learn how to express themselves, support one another and embrace new challenges.

These are skills that help children shine not just in performances, but in classrooms, friendships, future careers and everyday life. Whether they're four or fourteen, performing arts gives them the opportunity to discover what they're capable of and grow into confident, capable young people.

Ages 4 to 6: first steps with Poppets

For our youngest performers, PQA offers Poppets, a 90-minute introduction to performing arts designed especially for children aged four to six.

At this age, children are naturally imaginative.

They love storytelling, role play, movement and music, and Poppets channels that enthusiasm into exciting, structured activities that nurture creativity and confidence.

What happens in a Poppets class?

Every session is packed with fun and imagination, children may:

  • Step into the shoes of their favourite storybook characters
  • Create adventures in magical worlds
  • Learn simple songs and movement routines
  • Explore storytelling through games and play
  • Make new friends while developing social skills

Along the way, they build communication skills, coordination, teamwork and self-expression, often without even realising they are learning.
There is no pressure to perform and nothing to prepare beforehand. The focus is on enjoying the experience, growing in confidence and leaving with a smile.

Signs your little one is ready

If your child enjoys imaginative play, likes exploring new activities and can take part in simple group experiences, they are ready to give it a go. They certainly do not need to be outgoing.

In fact, performing arts can be especially powerful for quieter children because it provides a safe, encouraging space where they can gradually build confidence and find their voice.

Ages 6 to 11: building confidence

From age six, students join the PQA Main Academy, where every week they experience all three classes:

  • Comedy & Drama
  • Musical Theatre
  • Film & Television

Our unique three-class approach gives children the chance to discover what they enjoy most while developing a wide range of creative skills.
Students are grouped with others of a similar age, ensuring activities feel appropriately challenging, engaging and fun.

For many parents, this is the stage when they begin noticing real changes.
A child who once avoided speaking up in class may start volunteering answers at school. A child bursting with energy may learn how to focus their enthusiasm into something creative. As students work towards termly showcases, they also experience the satisfaction of committing to something, practising their skills and sharing their achievements with family and friends.

These moments often create self-belief that reaches far beyond PQA.

Ages 12 to 18: skills for stage, screen and life

For teenagers, PQA provides opportunities to grow both creatively and personally.
Students continue to study Comedy & Drama, Musical Theatre and Film & Television, while taking on more advanced challenges that develop their performance skills, creativity and independence.
Young people build skills that will benefit them wherever life takes them:

  • Confidence in public speakingLeadership and teamwork
  • Creative thinking
  • Resilience
  • Communication skills
  • Professionalism

There are opportunities to gain experiences that stand out, from performing in prestigious venues like His Majesties Theatre in the West End and creating original film projects that are entered into national Film Festivals, to developing audition skills and exploring professional pathways within the industry.

Mostly, others simply want one place in the week that is theirs, where they feel they belong and can be completely themselves.

Whether they dream of drama school or are preparing for university interviews, these experiences help young people become confident, capable individuals.

PQA Testimonial from a Principal at PQA Headington

"One of the most rewarding journeys we've seen has been a student who joined us shy, quiet and reluctant to step forward. With encouragement from teachers and peers, they gradually found their voice, taking creative risks, sharing ideas, performing on camera and, ultimately, delivering a standout showcase performance with brilliant comic timing and genuine stage presence.
Their growth didn't stop at PQA. Inspired by their newfound confidence, they auditioned for a school production of Macbeth, securing the role of King Duncan, and have continued to thrive ever since. They also achieved a Distinction in their LAMDA Grade 2 Musical Theatre exam, overcoming a challenge they once felt was beyond them.
Beyond performing, they have become a trusted and valued member of the academy, mastering our Film & TV equipment and even helping younger students learn how to use it safely and confidently. Seeing them grow not only as a performer but as a confident, capable young person has been a wonderful example of the positive impact of PQA Headington."
