On Saturday 26th March, PQA Brentwood was treated to a fantastic Masterclass in Mask work, presented by professional actor and physical theatre practitioner James Palm
As a trained actor from the famous East 15 School of Acting and then The Central School of Speech and Drama, James has performed and worked at The National Theatre, Shakespeares Globe, Old Vic, Young Vic, BAC, The Gate, Channel 4, BBC, Thames Television, ITV1 and Independent Radio.
An advocate of the very talented Trestle Theatre Company, James focussed around seven predominant masks all with different emotional exaggerated expressions.
Teaching students technique, characterisation, and physical expression, our students had a great time assuming the characters that the masks dictated, and performing to hot-seated questioning by the audience using only physicality of the masks character. All our students thought how their performances seemed to improve when using physicality in such a focussed way and, being an observer, I found it quite freaky seeing caricatures of larger than life expressive faces, being used in such a creative and believable way.
Well done Brentwood. Your creativity was exceptional and we look forward to having James back to see us again.
