PQA Worcester opened its doors for the first time on Saturday 16th May 2015 to 120 excited young people who participated in an action packed Performing Arts taster day in the state-of-the-art performance space at the King's School.
Two years on and 80 students between the ages of 6 -18 have taken to the West End to perform in The Lazy Ace at Shaftesbury Theatre. In between they have taken Trinity exams – gaining Distinctions in Musical Theatre, Devised Drama and Acting with Scripts; they have created ten short films and documentaries; entered a Film Festival; participated in Shakespearean, Puppetry, Script Writing, Choral Speaking, Physical Theatre and Stage Makeup workshops; taken Stage Combat and Sword Fighting Masterclasses; performed in Showcases at an Awards Ceremony and staged two academy multi-media productions of Scrooge and Peter Pan. In autumn 2016, they created films for their large-scale Cinema Screening and, in 2017, staged their first large scale Open-Air performance in Worcester.
As Principal, I am proud to be part of the PQA family which affords young people this opportunity to experience some of the most progressive Performing Arts tuition in the country. Our students have access to a large and well-equipped Drama and Dance studio and Theatre. We have our own film equipment including: Green screens, cameras, digital sound recorders, laptops, television screens, portable lighting rig, special effects, wardrobe, scenic and puppetry store.
My talented team of professionals are committed to engaging young people in three well-honed modules. Students aged 6 - 18 take part in Comedy and Drama, Film and Television and Musical Theatre sessions which provide them with a well-rounded understanding of The Performing Arts.
In Comedy and Drama, they experience an electric mix of theatre styles and learn techniques which will equip them for performance in Pros Arch, Studio, In-the-Round and Open-Air spaces. They will develop skills and a confidence which will sustain them through job interviews and presentations in years to come! In Musical Theatre they dance, sing, act and learn how to weave these three disciplines together to produce scenes and shows based on their favourite West End Musicals. In Film and Television, they learn how to develop scripts for film, how to story board, use a camera, create a film production team, present, act for camera, how to overlay sound and edit to produce their own films for large cinema screenings.
Young people who attend PQA Worcester are encouraged to express themselves through the Performing Arts and in an environment where emotional safety is paramount and individuality prized.
Please visit our Facebook page and do come along for a free taster session, we look forward to welcoming you.
Alison Chambers - Principal - PQA Worcester - [email protected]
As a professional theatre performer, writer and director I have always been passionate about providing opportunities for young people to experience and participate in the performing arts. I am therefore thrilled to be opening PQA Worcester where I believe young people will have access to the most enriching and progressive performing arts sessions in the county. Pauline's nurturing ethos: 'Be yourself. Be amazing', will be at the heart of everything we seek to achieve with the youngsters who join us on Saturday mornings. The state-of-the-art performance space in the beautiful grounds of the Kings School Worcester will be a perfect environment in which to make films, sing, dance, act and develop whilst having a thoroughly exciting time!
My own love for the performing arts began at the age of five when I played a tree! As I was incredibly shy I was overjoyed to land a role which allowed me to stand safely inside a cardboard trunk and wave my arms about when the wind blew. My shyness did slowly evaporate and by the age of fifteen I had become confident enough to take on the role of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz.
After training at Art College and then at Drama School in Birmingham I decided to become an actress and worked at BBC Pebble Mill playing roles such as Doreen in the award winning Nice Work by David Lodge. I have also been a voice over artist and made adverts for British Gas, Tesco, Debenhams, before moving into the theatre where I have worked continuously - from Plymouth Theatre Royal to the Garrison Theatre Shetland! My daughter, who is looking forward to joining PQA Worcester, was born whilst I was directing the National Tour of Far From the Madding Crowd (which stared Call the Midwife actor Stephen McGann). As an actress I have also worked in Theatre in Education in Schools throughout the Midlands, toured nationally playing roles such as Tony Britton's daughter in the vintage classic The Holly and the Ivy, the villain in The Return of Sherlock Holmes with Michael Cashman, Sheila Birling in An Inspector Calls, Liz in Present Laughter by Noel Coward, Mabel in An Ideal Husband, Janet in I Have Been Here Before and Olwen opposite the late Lewis Collins in Priestley's Dangerous Corner.
As a writer, adapter, director and producer my work has been predominantly aimed at young people and includes adaptations of the Railway Children, which starred Children's BAFTA Actor Brian Cant as the Old Gentleman and was directed by Brian and his wife Cherry, West Midlands Arts funded A Visit From Scrooge, Little Women which premiered at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, the national tour of Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Theatre-in-education projects such as Wood Dragon, The Wars of the Roses, Florence Nightingale, Wind in the Willows and Heritage projects such as Soe Well I Love Thee for English Heritage and Pre Raphaelite Seeds which premiered at the National Portrait Gallery. I have also produced five seasons of open air theatre for The National Trust and produced and directed the National tour of Babe the Sheep Pig which opened at the Rose Theatre Kingston.
I work regularly throughout Worcestershire for schools, museums and theatres writing, producing and delivering performance based workshops for young people, directing young people in performance and teaching for Trinity College acting exams and I am really looking forward to putting this experience to good use at PQA Worcester when we open in May.

Film & Television Assistant
I have been fascinated by films and filmmaking ever since my dad showed me the original Star
Wars when I was four years old.
My interest led me to attend Syracuse University's summer college film program in New York state last year, which opened the door to participation in the British Film Institute's regional film academy at Rural Media in Hereford.
I have worked on several short films in a variety of roles, including cinematographer, sound recordist, director and editor, and my aim is to study Film Production at university in the United States.
In addition, I secured work experience with Malvern Theatre this year and assisted them on their Young Company productions of The Crucible and Guys and Dolls.
I enjoy anything to do with the arts and helping others explore their own creativity.
