Welcome to The Pauline Quirke Academy Wolverhampton. The Academy has become well established over the past couple of years and is beginning to settle into being part of the community. We have a great group of teachers and students and lots of plans for the future.

Our major target is confidence; it is just as rewarding, if not more, to see a child who lacks confidence step forward in class as it is to see a confident and experienced child do a great performance at show-time. We try to achieve this through fun and entertaining classes while incorporating the skills and techniques necessary to improve their performing ability.

2015 saw our first cinema screening with the students seeing themselves on the big screen amongst a total of 26 films shown at our local cinema. It was an exciting event with students walking the red carpet and being interviewed by a film crew and photographed as they entered the screen.

2016 is finishing with our second Panto Fairy Jail featuring nearly 30 main characters and loads of songs it is a great fun show packed with jokes and corny lines (the corniest ones mostly written by Principal Julian).

In May 2017 the students will travel to London for our second West End experience in The Lazy Ace. Our first show was massively rewarding for the students and gave them some idea of the depth of knowledge of their part that is required for a major show.

Students have also visited the BBC Studios at Media City in Manchester on 2 separate occasions, had a day at Sky TV where they not only prepared a news report using Sky's state-of-the-art training suite but also appeared on Live TV as part of the audience of a show on Sky Sports and visited our local theatre to see Shrek the Musical. In February 2017 most of the older students will be visiting New York to take part in workshops on Broadway and TV studios.

Meet the Team

Julian Elcock

Principal

Julian Elcock - Principal

Hi, I am Principal and Film and TV teacher for both Wolverhampton and Bridgnorth academies.

I spent 20+ years working as a Barrister practicing criminal law before I set up my first academy at Bridgnorth in 2011. There is no doubt that my experience in court brings a different and valuable wealth of performance experience and gives me a unique insight into the performers world.

As a teenager I was heavily involved in school productions and working for theatre groups and bands. I moved on to working as a lighting technician for bands on tour and also with concert orchestras and theatrical companies before having a change of career and taking up the law.

I returned to the performing world when my son (now 16) began performing as a young child, this rekindled a passion and led to the idea to start Pauline Quirke Academy Bridgnorth with a view to making it a vital part of the town's community, with Pauline Quirke Academy Wolverhampton following 1 year later.

I have recently given up the law and am now working full time in the Performing Arts sphere, I have recently filmed my first documentary film for a local band, a music video and been heavily involved in a short film in our town. I have also recently published my first novel.

I am writing scripts at the moment for a film short with a view to expanding it to a full feature length film if there is sufficient interest and am involved in a new comedy series, the pilot for which we are shooting at the moment including several scenes at my home.

I am passionate about giving students opportunities that simply did not exist in my day and offering that to as many students as possible. Our ethos is that we want to offer students the opportunity to increase their confidence and ability to express themselves through the medium of Performing Arts and Cinema.

Dana

Comedy & Drama

Dana - Comedy & Drama

Like everyone else, I have always known I wanted to be an actor. Also like everyone, I chose to prepare for a job that will support this goal. I studied Social Psychology and completed my degree at Western Michigan University with honors and an award from the department.

I went on to volunteer with AmeriCorps, and then work with kids at a treatment center, which I loved. When they shut down, I put my performer pants back on and moved to LA. I knew no one, and had no legitimate credits to my name, but whatever, I figured, I can set up camp at the KIA and then go get discovered. Ever since I have been working hard, training and performing in Los Angeles, Michigan, Chicago and the UK.

I started my more formal training in fourth grade, attempting to both read and understand "The Actor Prepares" and "Acting is Believing" and joining John Casablancas. I have taken voice classes through The Sonneman Studio, and workshops with Gordon Michaels, Frank Ridely and Carl Stillitano. I have had the immense pleasure of working with Arthur Mendoza at the Actors Circle Theatre in Los Angeles for 3 years, and have taken Improv Classes at GoComedy with Suzie Jacokes, and Technique Classes at the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre. I have also had the great honor of training with the Moscow Art Repertory Theatre School.

As an actress I have had roles in 'Grey's Anatomy' and 'Mad Men' for TV, and I have made over 30 films. My movie "Alone in The Universe" with Joshua Courtade has recently premiered. "Bestseller" has also recently premiered. In the last six months we completed production for a short I cast with Abronia Pictures, Third Hill Productions and Three Goats Moving Pictures and just wrapped my role in an industrial film. Last year I was nominated for an Eclipse Award for Best Actress for my role in 'Black Paper".

Currently I am studying actor training for my Masters at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London. I am on placement at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and Rose Bruford in London, teaching and directing performances with their degree level students.

I am really looking forward to working with the students at PQA and creating some exciting drama together.

Mathew

Film & Television

Mathew - Film & Television

Born and raised in the Black Country, Mathew Hammond is an experienced screenwriter and short film director and producer. For almost a decade he has been honing his skills and understanding of the craft through his work on fiction and non-fiction short films, as well as commercial material. Since 2012 he has been running a commercial video production business, and working independently on productions across the nation.

Having graduated with a degree in Film Production from the University of Central Lancashire in 2013, Mathew, as well as working for corporate clients and on other studio productions, also works to create artistic content in the form of short films and music videos, whilst furthermore teaching film, and learning about it himself too, having put into motion new steps in education, in the form of a masters degree.

In recent years, the ambitious filmmaker has collected a wealth of different experiences in the field of teaching film. His background ranges from that of directing a wide variety of performers both young and adult, to running workshops with child and adult actors. H has been involved in large scale feature length films, and worked as a camera operator on popular events, like music concerts for chart topping artists.

Mathew is a strong believer in the education of young and driven filmmakers, particularly when it comes to the principals of filmmaking. Many individuals believe that they can make a good film by simply watching a lot good films, but in reality, without any knowledge of the essential conventions involved in filmmaking, the aspiring director is probably doomed to cliché and catastrophe. At PQA Mathew hopes to avoid this very outcome through practice and refinement. Handing over to students the essential level of understanding required, to understand and interpret form into their own work, both in film, and other artistic mediums.

Harry

Musical Theatre

Harry - Musical Theatre

For as long as I can remember I have always wanted a career as a performer. When I was a young girl, when anyone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up the answer was anyways 'An actor .... or mermaid'. Whilst growing up I soon realized that being a mermaid was a harder profession to crack, so I set my sights on acting.

Just before my 19th birthday, I flew to America having got a job working for Walt Disney World in Florida. I was employed with them for a year. When I returned, I dived straight into work and saved up money for my next adventure. After two years of being back in the U.K and performing many different acts and routines, I left for Australia. While traveling, I found my footing in Melbourne. A beautiful city with such a vibrant culture and wonderful art scene. Whilst there I busked on the street and I also joined a performance troupe called The Bad Ladies.

Back in the UK I joined two local theatre companies called Bilston Operatic and MUSCOM. I played the part of Yum-Yum in The Hot Mikado and then with MUSCOM I was Marty in Grease and Paulette in Legally Blonde. These shows were both performed at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre.

In 2015 I joined the cast of Evil Dead the Musical in Las Vegas, performing a lead role, returning home after a 6-month run I joined PQA as MT teacher at PQA having known Julian and Marguerite for several years.
