Meet the Team

Emma Huet

Principal

Emma Huet - Principal

Hello!

I'm Emma Huet, and I am delighted to be given this opportunity as the new Principal of the Southend Academy. I will be working relentlessly with the wonderful PQA Southend team to ensure that we maintain our high standards!

I attended the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, graduating in 2009 with a degree in Drama, Applied theatre and Education (BA Hons). Throughout my time at Central I gained a huge amount of experience in performance, backstage and outreach theatre work and am a fully trained drama practitioner. Although I do thoroughly enjoy performing my passion for drama comes from the ability it has to empower the people that embrace it. Drama offers the opportunity to gain self-confidence, challenge new ideas and creates a fun and engaging work ethic, particularly amongst young people.

My community outreach work has been with a variety of groups including the Isle of Man Adoption Service, MIND, Music Platform, A-Team Arts and a variety of primary and secondary schools throughout the country. All of these projects have used drama, music and art to engage participants with a selection of social and educational needs.

In my first year after graduating I worked at Central as the Student Union President where I worked alongside a range of arts professionals to ensure the best learning environment was upheld for all students at Central. Throughout this year I managed a team of 18 volunteers and as a collective we achieved really great results covering a range of areas including entertainment, welfare and campaigns.

I have recently left a post as a Teaching Assistant/Engagement mentor at the Childrens' Support Service (PRU) in Langdon Hills working with young people that have a diverse range of needs. As of September I will be working as a secondary drama teacher at the Bromfords school, Wickford.

Nick

Vice Principal/Comedy & Drama

Nick - Vice Principal/Comedy & Drama

Hello!

I am Nick Bell, the Film & TV teacher at the new Southend Academy. I am really excited to be starting this role at PQA and I am dedicated to achieving high quality work created by all of our young people, and being a part of the Essex team.

In June 2011, I obtained my degree in Drama, Applied theatre and Education at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. Throughout my time at Central I have worked on a wide range of projects with young people primarily in school settings, using drama and craft to engage and inspire. I have a student based work ethic allowing young people to feel ownership over the work they create and pride over that which they have achieved. I am a fully trained drama practioner and a strong believer that drama/performing arts can unlock huge potential amongst young people.

My film and TV experience is varied as I have created my own short films for degree work but have also worked in collaboration with external companies including Surrey County Council, The Tadworth Childrens' Trust, Banstead Youth Centre and a selection of primary schools across the country to create pieces of film which have been factual, creative and have allowed theses young people to voice their opinions and views through the medium of film. I have also worked professionally within the short film business in a myriad of roles from Production manager to Runner. I have worked with professionals such as Barrington Paul Robinson, Pete postlethwaite, Mary Nighy and Celia Imrie. This professional experience will allow me to be a knowledgeable and professional film maker, teacher and creator within the PQA family.

Before starting at Central I took a gap year during which I worked as Youth Development Officer at The Banstead Youth Centre. My role allowed me to deliver a wide range of drama and film projects that were very successful. All of these projects were tackling social issues such as eating disorders and bullying, giving the young people involved the chance to make their voices heard.

I have recently qualified as a secondary drama teacher and from September will be teaching at West Hatch High School, Chigwell.

She then reprised her role for a second time a year later, on this occasion with Phillip Schofield. It was then that Kristina decided she wanted to become a professional performer, so after leaving school she went on to Study GNVQ Performing Arts at SEEC.

In her dance career, Kristina has worked with some of the original pioneers of Hip Hop, and has been mentored by teachers from all over the globe.

Russell

Film & Television

Russell - Film & Television

Hi I'm Russell
I'm delighted and honoured to be joining the academy and look forward to working with both the staff and students at PQA Southend. I plan to help the students make professional, creative and exciting projects that will give the students all the skills they need to create a wide range of T.V and film productions.
I studied media and t.v & film production at college before embarking on a career within the industry and have worked at some of the top production houses in London. I have worked as both a cameraman and editor as well as all other aspects of the media industry. I have worked on music videos, short films, tv shows, music festivals and sporting events.
I am competent in a wide range of production skills including camera operator, sound, lighting, final cut pro editing and photoshop.
For the past seven years I have worked within an academy as a media technician where I have also taught media and taken classes for outreach projects at local primary schools. The students I have worked with have produced short films, tv adverts and soap operas to name but a few.
I am looking forward to helping PQA Southend produce the most creative and interesting productions that the whole PQA family can be proud of.

Annabel

Poppets

Annabel - Poppets

Hello, I'm Annabel and I am thrilled to be a part of the PQA Southend Team teaching the wonderful Poppets!!
I have previously had three years experience and training in Musical Theatre where I also gained an ATCL Performance Teaching Qualification. Since then I have been teaching young kids dance and acting as well as having worked professionally. Some of my credits include Guildford Shakespeare Company during 2012/13 in their winter productions of Richard III and Macbeth as well as working with Synaestheatre Physical Theatre Company in 2015 touring a production to France.

I am also a qualified ISTD Dance teacher for Tap and Ballet. With my previous experience's it's a real pleasure to teach and inspire the Poppets students here at PQA.

I believe that the power of play through singing, dancing and acting plays a huge part in a child's development as well as giving them a new found confidence for their bright futures ahead.

Chelsea

Academy Assistant

Chelsea - Academy Assistant

Hi, I'm Chelsea O'Connell and I am very excited to become part of the PQA team. I am very passionate about performing arts, starting at the age of 13 when I joined PQA Southend academy. I have learnt many skills and made lots of good friends at the academy. Being at PQA has allowed me to be part of many experiences; we performed at Her Majesty's theatre in London, sang at a Christmas carol concert held at The Shard and I played Nancy in our production of Oliver, which I thoroughly enjoyed performing. I also passed with distinction in a group trinity exam.
I am currently studying "A" level Drama, Music and Photography at Sixth Form College. I participated in the Stratford and East Ham music festival and the Southend music festivals. I have my musical theatre grade 5 with a distinction and am currently studying towards my next grade. In my spare time I enjoy singing at fundraiser charity events.
