"As Principal of PQA Chelmsford I aspire for every young person who trains with us to leave the academy each week with a smile on their face and buzzing with tales from their classes! There is no one 'star' performer at our academy - they're all stars, working as a team, where each has an equal opportunity to dazzle whether in a showcase, Red Carpet Film Premier at the Cinema, public performance or West End Show."

Meet the Team

Stephen Hawke

Principal

Stephen Hawke - Principal

Hi, my name is Stephen Hawke & I am the proud Principal of PQA Chelmsford.

I was delighted to be asked to become involved with the Pauline Quirke Academy eight years ago & continue the philosophy of providing a creative & fun learning environment for Drama, Theatre & the Performing Arts for our young people.
As one of life's "creative types" I have been professionally involved in Theatre & Dramatic Arts for around seventeen years, having been first inspired by Willie Russell's West End Production of Blood Brothers back in the late 90's.
I received initial Training as an actor at the Norwich Theatre Royal & "The Garage" in various aspects of Acting, Theatre & Stagecraft, and trained in unarmed stage combat & where aspirations of coaching the Dramatic Arts became a natural progression for me & to which I now dedicate all of my "spare" time.
Attending C.C.A.T.S Drama College & with a passion for Shakespeare, I received professional accreditation as both Actor & Teacher (following The Trinity College London curriculum and now work towards a Licentiate accreditation in Applied Speech & Drama)
Past Stage credits include (among others), "Dr Chapman -marriage guidance councilor" in Michael Cooney's "Cash on Delivery" (Best Supporting Actor award), the U-Boat Commander "Don't Tell him your name Pike" in "Dads Army", "The Hotel Inspector" in "Fawlty Towers", Malcolm Hedley News Anchorman in "Dark Justice" & I also auditioned for West End productions of "Ghost Stories" and "Blackwatch".
TV, movie & ad/commercial appearances range from Government Alcohol awareness campaign "Know your Limits", through to Tetley Tea, BT, Google, BT Sport, Sky Sport, Sony (Playstation), VW & SEAT car companies, Nike, & M&M Sweets (which has an amusing story!).
As frequent "Featured / Supporting Actor" in popular Soaps such as "Eastenders", "Midsomer Murders", "Silent Witness" "Holby" & prior regular in "The Bill", I have also been featured in many episodes of "Law & Order" (with Bradley Walsh), "Hope & Glory" (Lenny Henry), Sherlock, Whitechapel, Spooks, Todd Margaret, Miranda, The Steven K Amos Show, Chucklevision, Victoria Wood's Christmas Special, Silent Witness, & The Real Hustle as well as bigger budget productions such as the recent Sky Atlantic blockbuster series "The Last Panthers" with John Hurt, & movies including "Franklyn", "Reuniting the Rubins" (Timothy Spall) "Maybe Baby" (starring Hugh Laurie/directed by Ben Elton), Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows Part 1, "Sleepy Hollow" (Johnny Depp), X-Men First Class (20th Century Fox, starring James McAvoy), & Sleepy Head etc. (I also appeared as a featured Hospital Visitor in the popular series "Missing" starring our very own Pauline!)

I am a firm believer in the PQA "serious fun" philosophy for our students. Enjoyment whilst learning is fundamental to any child's development & seeing our students having a great time whilst achieving their personal goals & gaining confidence is a hugely rewarding experience.
With a hand-picked team of dedicated, highly professional teachers (all of whom are working actors, actresses, Choreographers, singers & Film Directors/producers), I know that the enthusiasm, ability & creative, fun-approach adopted by all of us at PQA will continue to be a fabulous environment for your children.

See you Saturday! Xx

Oli

Film & Television

Oli - Film & Television

"Oli can remember the first film he ever saw at the cinema: it was Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade. Since then he has never looked back.

He made his first short film at the age of 11 with the video camera he bought with the money from his paper round and has continued making short films ever since. Throughout his childhood he would invite his friends, his brothers' friends and anyone else he could grab to help him make these shorts across various genres.

His interest in film has never wavered, leading him to complete a BA Hons degree at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge in Drama and Film making, gaining a 2:1.

Oli s studied various theoretical and practical modules including Film and Genre, Scriptwriting and Short-Film Making, further developing his understanding of the practical aspects of making films as well as a solid understanding of what to think about when writing them. As part of his degree Oli created a short film based around the concept of "departing and arriving", following the point of view of a bullet as it departs the barrel of a gun and arrives at the dark and tragic resting place of its human victim. This short was screened and illustrates Oli's ambitious and innovative approach to film making, where he has never allowed a lack of budget to interfere with his imagination in film making.

Oli has had undertaken various jobs in the film industry, including working as a first Assistant Director for Take One Videos, where he worked on corporate videos for both Essex Fire and Police services, where closing down the Dartford Tunnel to shoot a video involving a mock-up of a multi-car pile up in the tunnel made for an interesting night shoot . He has also worked as a Script Analyst for "The Producers", a BAFTA award winning production company in central London producing such shows as The Politician's Wife, starring Juliet Stevenson, Trevor Eve and Minnie Driver.

Oli successfully completed a Diploma course at The London Academy of Media, Film and TV, further developing his film making skills, as well as gaining valuable Industry experience. Part of this course involved meeting industry insiders and delivering a mock 'pitch' idea for a short film- where Oli's film was picked as a winner from a list of over a dozen high quality entries. Prior work as a secondary school teacher of drama and heading up an A Level Media and Film Studies department, Oli now works in London producing corporate training videos that are being show cased around the country. He continues to write and make his own short films and even continues to rope in his younger brother, now a trained actor, to help him.

Oli is a highly valuable member of the PQA Essex Team (Brentwood and Chelmsford), and is totally committed to providing a solid training experience for our young Film and TV students."

Shelby

Musical Theatre

Shelby - Musical Theatre

I am a hugely passionate performer and consider that we are constantly undergoing training and gaining experience throughout our careers. Having danced from the age of three and studied both singing and acting at college, my main fields of expertise are Ballet, Tap, Modern, Lyrical and Jazz styles. However in recent years I've also studied Contemporary and Commercial dance, vocal work and Acting.

Over the years, I have performed in Pantomimes as both a dancer and principal roles. I've taken part in various dance competitions, accumulating over 250 medals and trophies, including 'Most Promising Classical Dancer', 'Highest Ballet Mark', 'Highest Character Mark', 'Most Promising Choreographer' and the 'Adjudicator's award'. I have enjoyed performances with companies such as English Youth Ballet, Blah Blah Productions, Mardi Gras and gained my main training from The Castle Pointe Academy where I have studied I.S.T.D Ballet, Imperial Modern and Tap as well as B.A.T.D Ballet and LAMDA Acting.
(I also performed in Disneyland Paris twice, once on the Fantasy Festival Stage and once on the Videopolis Stage).

Taught by professional dancers from West End Shows such as 'Thriller Live: The Musical', 'Wicked' and 'Chicago', I am honoured to have been given vocal lessons Lee Mead (when he was in the ensemble of Phantom of the Opera, and before he won Andrew Lloyd Webber's role of Joseph in 'Joseph'.

My aspirations within the industry remain being a triple threat performer and perform in West End shows utilizing my wonderful experiences to inspire young people.

As a dancer, if I could perform in any show it would have be 'Thriller Live: The Musical' because the choreography is simply outstanding and the energy of such high intensity.

It is a privilege and an honour to be involved with PQA Chelmsford and working with Stephen Hawke and his team of professionals, and I look forward to seeing each and every student every week.
