Hi, I'm Tom Barker and I am thrilled to be your principal at PQA Cardiff!
Born and raised in Cardiff I have been involved in theatre since a young age. At 10 years old I played the part of Farmer Munchkin in The Wizard of Oz and the rest, as they say, is history! I continued in theatre throughout my teens and 20s and have been lucky enough to perform in a wide variety of shows and mediums.
In 2011 I moved to London to study and in 2014 I graduated top of my class with first class honours in drama (BA) from University of Greenwich, where I was also award the LLT award for outstanding contribution to the drama department. I am also qualified at advanced level in stage combat with the APC. Whilst studying and in the year following I continued to work acting, directing, writing, and teaching before the opportunity to open Wales' first PQA here at home in Cardiff arose, an opportunity I jumped at!
Having been a part of, and having taught, theatre at youth level I know how valuable a life skill it is to be able to communicate well, learn empathy and get some confidence. It's also a fantastic place to make new friends and have lots of fun! At PQA Cardiff we strive to create a safe, enjoyable environment where our students can learn a whole host of new skills and express themselves. I hope to meet you soon!
I have always had a passion for theatre and a love for working with children. From a young age I have practiced musical theatre, drama, dance and trained in ballet performing in professional shows. Whilst studying at the University of Greenwich I started writing performances for young children and children with learning disabilities, from there my passion to inspire young performers grew.
I started working in a secondary school directing musical productions and assisting with the student's work in Drama. After finishing university, I continued to teach in both mainstream and special educational needs schools and have always found drama a fantastic teaching tool.
As Vice Principal I love having the opportunity to work every week teaching and behind the scenes at PQA Cardiff. We have produced fantastic work and aim to inspire all our students, PQA Cardiff is an amazing opportunity for everyone involved and I love being a part of it!
Comedy & Drama
I trained as an actor and graduated with a BA hons in Acting in 2010 from Trinity College. I am a Cardiff based professional actor, musician and freelance facilitator.
I have worked with a number of organisations, these include: BBC, WNO (Welsh National Opera), Feral/ Arcade Fire, Hijinx, Mess Up The Mess, Shakespeare School's Foundation, Theatre Ffynnon and Taking Flight Theatre Company and teaching for Nofit State youth circus for a number of years.
I have developed projects that include visual arts, music, movement, comedy and tactile learning play. This work also includes consulting for residential work at several PRU's (Pupil Referral Units).
I always love to keep on top of my skills. I have been lucky enough to perform across the world, the most unusual place being Limburg! I am co-director of the international and critically acclaimed company 'Flossy and Boo'. I am so happy to be helping to boost the confidence and skills of young people in PQA Cardiff.
I am thrilled to be a part of the PQA team in Cardiff working as the Poppets assistant. I have had a passion for performing arts since the young age of 5, where I started my training at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. I attended the 'Junior Music School' and the 'Young Actor's Studio' studying Voice, Piano, Flute and Acting.
Recently, I have just graduated from the University of Chichester gaining a First-Class BA Honours in Music and Musical Theatre, studying all three disciplines of singing, dancing and acting. I have a desire to encourage and inspire young children to partake in performing arts and I relish seeing each individual at PQA grow in confidence and ability week-by-week.
Film & Television
Hi, I'm Jack and I am the Film and Television teacher at PQA Cardiff. After graduating from the University of South Wales with a degree in Film and Video Production, I established my own media production company alongside some of my colleagues.
Providing media services to many internationally recognised clients, as well as having experience working with the BBC, S4C, ITV and Channel 4 on a range of television and film productions, I have gained a wide-ranging skillset and knowledge of the media industry.
I was offered the opportunity of being the Film and Television teacher at PQA Cardiff and I jumped at the chance. It's brilliant working in such a positive environment, being able to encourage and motivate the students to reach their creative potential is extremely rewarding.
I'm thrilled to be teaching at PQA; it's great to be a part of such a friendly team and the students are such a pleasure to teach. They're all so enthusiastic towards learning about Film and Television and PQA really give them the opportunity for their imaginations and creativity to flourish.
Hello I'm Rachel and I am the Poppets teacher at PQA Cardiff. As a fully qualified child care practitioner I have a lot of experience in working with young children. I believe in the importance of learning through play and the structure of our poppets lessons is a perfect example of how we can incorporate performing arts into education and vice versa. I received an outstanding contribution award from Cardiff University for my work with preschool children in storytelling and characterisation.
I have always loved performing arts, especially musical theatre. As a Mum of two I also have extensive Disney knowledge and my own superhero obsession!
I can't wait to go on many amazing adventures with the poppets and really encourage them to let their brilliantly unique personalities shine through. The lessons really are fuelled by the children's passion for stories and performing which is what makes the adventures extra magical!
I am a classroom assistant at PQA Cardiff; I was given the opportunity to work at the academy and jumped at the chance to be part of something so positive. As a classroom assistant I get to work alongside the incredible students and team who deliver unique and exciting opportunities, making it fun and enjoyable for all involved. Just seeing how much the kids enjoy the academy week in, week out makes it an extremely rewarding experience and something I love.
Each week we get to see students develop skills and grow in confidence, PQA Cardiff offers students a unique opportunity to learn skills they wouldn't otherwise have access too. It is great to work with a team where everyone is passionate about what they do, including the students!
After graduating from the University of Birmingham with a degree in Drama and Theatre Arts, I went on to study for a postgraduate diploma in performance at London's prestigious drama school, Mountview. Following a brief stint as an actress, I gained a job as an agent's assistant with talent agency, MLA Talent, where I assisted the MD of the company with managing high profile and up-and-coming comedians, actors, presenters, and DJs, as well as running a venue at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In 2010, I departed London for a 2-year period working overseas, managing performers for events at 5-star hotels across Europe.
Swansea born, I was delighted to re-join Mad Dog Casting at the start of 2013, with the brief to launch the Welsh office within the year. As Head of Casting at the Cardiff office, I supplied Supporting Artists to major productions including Wolf Hall, Sherlock, and Pride. More recently, I have moved into a new role running the Learning Events Programme for BAFTA Cymru.
Committed to supporting and strengthening the Creative Industries in Wales, I have previously worked on a volunteer basis to design and deliver career guidance workshops for Educational Charities 'Into Film' and 'Inspiring Futures' and I love working with the students at PQA Cardiff. I hope that I can share my industry knowledge with them to help them grow as performers and as people whilst having lots of fun too!
I was a Red group student at PQA Cardiff for 2 years after it was founded in 2015, performing in their shows Revolting and The Lazy Ace in the Shaftesbury Theatre. I achieved my Trinity grades 3 & 4 in Musical Theatre in Production, and have performed with various companies all over Cardiff. I'm currently studying performing arts at St David's College and am delighted to now be on board as a runner at PQA.
