Within this module we cover the performance of pieces of musical theatre – which includes song and dance. Each module uses material from a different show, which will give the students experience of a range of styles – from modern shows to classics.
In this class students could be rehearsing anything from 'Grease - The Musical' through to Leonard Bernstein's interpretation of Shakspeare's Romeo and Juliet in his 'West Side Story'!!
There is an emphasis on singing in this module – and in particular, the personal performance of a song. Students are encouraged to consider musical interpretation and improve their vocal ranges. They are taught singing techniques, which includes breathing and diaphragmatic exercises, which helps to strengthen and aid a strong and reliable voice. Students also learn part-singing and choral work as well as how to harmonise.
Dance is used to enhance the understanding of a song in performance. A range of dance styles will be covered, as appropriate to the material being used that term.
The use of script will also be included from time to time, including ways of approaching dialogue in musical theatre and giving students the ability to pass from dialogue to song to dance seamlessly within the performance process.
During advanced sessions and holiday workshops, projects such as ‘Make a Musical’ may be mounted, where students use all the skills they have learned so far to devise, write and perform their own short musical.
